the process
thrown clay
First, the clay is hand thrown on a potter's wheel. During this part, I center the clay, remove all bubbles, and turn it into the piece I want it to be. Then we trim the piece to perfect it.
bisque fire
During the bisque fire, the clay is brought to a temperature of 1915-1945 Fahrenheit. This typically takes 12 hours to reach temperature and another 12 hours to cool down. This process hardens the clay into ceramic and makes it porous and suitable for glazing.
glazing
After the bisque fire - I can begin to glaze! Some of my pieces are kept more natural, and some have a fun pop of color!
glaze fire
During the glaze fire, the pieces is brought to a temperature of 2100-2300 Fahrenheit. This typically takes 8 1/2 hours to reach temperatures and another 8 1/2 hours to cool down. This process fires the piece to a temperature at which the glaze materials will melt to form a glasslike surface coating.
